Get To Know Get To Know… Between Friends

Fresh off of the release of new mixtape ‘tape 003’, meet the brother-sister duo.

Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.

Recently we’ve met Paris’ Oracle Sisters, Welsh soul singer Nia Wyn, Glasgow newbies VLURE, Ireland songwriter Smoothboi Ezra, and now we’re introducing you to LA-based brother-sister duo Between Friends.

Sharing their brand new mixtape ‘tape 003’ last week, Savannah and Brandon Hudson craft refreshing dream-pop bops that ooze cool.

“‘tape 003’ is dedicated to isolation and finding sanctuary within reflection,” they say of their recent release. “On these 5 songs we look back on unsettled feelings and relationships, finding solitude in the release of letting these stories go. Sonically our goal was to blend synthetic elements that felt like metaphorical masks towards past experiences with the rawest most vulnerable sounds that have come from us in our room.”

We sent them over some qs to find out a lil’ bit more about them…

Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.
like eating a space pineapple strawberry flavored sour patch kid while laying in a field looking at cloud shapes.

What’s your earliest musical memory?
there are so many early musical memories but to name a few that stand out at the moment, listening to 90s house and then fleetwood mac ‘rumours’ back to back with our parents in the car. experiencing ‘dark side of the moon’ at a laserium for the first time. writing love songs about our neighbors when we were 10.

Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?
to remember correctly, we were more inspired by genres rather than artists when we were starting out. there was such a special feeling discovering a sound we hadn’t heard before and then diving deep trying to find more like it. we listened to everything from dance music to early 90s pop, the classics and a lot of disco.

You’re from LA! What do you think of the music scene there at the moment?
LA is such a great place for creating. its extremely inspiring to see how much the music scene has evolved. at one point it was all about local performers and events and now it has shifted to recognizing a new sound of pop music coming from peoples houses and bedroom studios.

Are there any other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?
we are constantly discovering and listening to new music. i think when we are creating though, we like to isolate our ears and pull ideas from within ourselves and from each other. our goal everyday in the studio is to have a blank canvas and to fill it with something new.

Who would be your dream collaborator?
snoop dogg and pharrell.

Musically or otherwise, what are you most looking forward to this year?
reuniting with friends and being altogether once again. it’s been pretty crazy isolating ourselves. really looking forward to sneaking demos in at house parties.

If people could take away one thing from your music, what would it be?
if it makes you feel good, or feel anything at all than we couldn’t be happier. we just want to connect from our world to yours.
