Introducing Get To Know… Spill Gold

The Amsterdam-based band make woozy, psychedelic jams to immerse yourself in.

Hello and welcome to DIY’s introducing feature, Get To Know… With two new acts a week, the feature pretty much does what it says on the tin: getting you a little bit closer to the buzziest new acts that have been catching our eye as of late, and working out what makes them tick.

We’ve recently introduced you to Margate producer and vocalist Art School Girlfriend, Jerry Paper, an LA native making weirdly wonderful pop, Portland native Black Belt Eagle Scout, Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Pizzagirl and Newcastle via London newcomer Brooke Bentham. Up next, it’s Amsterdam’s Spill Gold!

The band released their self-titled debut EP last year, and it’s getting a cassette release for Cassette Store Day (13th October) via Portland’s Beacon Sound Records. It’ll include new remixes by Virginia Wing, H. De Heutz, Stijn Hosman of electronic duo Polynation, Jaclyn Blumas of Doomsquad, and Omari Jazz. The Virginia Wing remix of ‘Mercury’ is now streaming (catch it below).

The band will play a series of UK dates next month, before supporting Bristol’s BEAK> across Europe later in the year.

View the dates, listen to ‘Mercury’ and read our interview with the band below.

Describe your music to us in the form of a Tinder bio.

Come meet us on the dancefloor.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Rosa: California Dreaming through the womb of my Mom.

Nina: I think that would be a song my dad always played on our birthdays and where we danced on in the living room, I can’t remember the artist or song name but it was a rock ‘n’ roll song, I think.

Who were some artists that inspired you when you were just starting out (and why)?

The Velvet Underground - we both like the raw energy, the rhythms, the sound of all the instruments together. We all have very diverse inspirations but a few common ones are Fever Ray, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Patti Smith and Blonde Redhead. We like those artists because they do more than just making music. We are all working as musicians but are also active as performers in all sorts of arts, are making huge puppets and doing parades, working with kids and making theatre plays. So I think it’s natural for us to connect to artists that also work multidisciplinary.

You’re based in Amsterdam - what’s the music scene like there at the moment? Are there other artists breaking through at the same time that you take inspiration from?

It a diverse but small scene in Amsterdam with good improvised music, dance music and we have some amazing bands like The Ex and Blue Crime based here. There are some small but good venues like De Ruimte, Gare du Noord, OCCII, de Nieuwe Anita and some other places. Nice festivals are Le Guess Who (Utrecht) and Rewire in the Hague. But like in some other bigger cities, there seems to be less and less space for independent more experimental venues, one of our favourite spots is being turned into a Starbucks and one of the last big squatted free spaces called ADM probably needs to close down soon..

Who is your dream collaborator?

David Byrne // Patti Smith // Nick Cave // Fever Ray

What are you looking forward to in 2018, musically or otherwise?

We have just partnered with a label in Portland - Beacon Sound Records - who’ve worked with the likes of Colleen, Peter Broderick and Terry Riley. They are putting out a deluxe extended version of our debut EP on cassette for Cassette Store Day! We worked with a lot of friends to form this release as there are 5 remixes as well as the original 5 tracks, so will be nice to see this cassette coming into the world! We also have a UK tour coming up at the start of October and a EP re-release party at Sexyland in Amsterdam!

If people take away one thing from your music what would you want it to be?

Pour out the best you’ve got and get drenched bathing in it.

Let’s exchange some energy. <3
