This week Gold-Bears have released their debut album, ‘Are You Falling In Love?’, via Slumberland Records.

Founding member Jeremy Underwood takes a bit of time out from his day - in between a live set at a Brooklyn radio station and a club show in the same city - to tell us about the record, and what he and the band are up to.

So, your new album is called ‘Are You Falling In Love?’. Are you sentimental sorts?
Not particularly. The whole album has an underlying theme of the natural waxing and waning of a relationship. Lots of highs and lows.

It seems a funny time of year to be releasing an album with a song on it titled ‘Xmas’.
Hah! I suppose so. The title comes from a line in the song. There are actually a few Christmas references on the album. Not sure why, though.

How did the hook up with Slumberland Records come about?
It was rather simple. I sent him a demo and asked if he wanted to release something and he agreed to do the record.

Was the whole thing recorded in your home studio?
Well, we recorded all our parts at Erich’s [guitar] house. He’s an amazing engineer and producer. Scott Brewer from the excellent bands The Motifs and Summer Cats played and recorded Farfisa at his home on Australia. Kristine Capua sang from her home in Chicago. She plays in an awesome band called Very Truly Yours. Both Kristine and Scott emailed us their files when they were done. Hi-tech!

Does this method of production allow you more freedom, do you think? Are you fans of make-shift instruments, off-the-wall techniques and the like?
Of course. I’ve always done home recording. I’ve had bad experiences at studios. I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to the sonic aesthetics of a recording so it’s nice to do it at home when yr not rushed and can experiment to get the right sound.

What are your ambitions for Gold-Bears? Where are you headed?
We just want to continue recording and releasing music. It’d be nice to tour the UK and Japan, too. We are just very grateful that we’ve been given such wonderful opportunities to release music with labels we truly love and admire.
