Although their own declaration of “Robots will rock the Earth” reminds me of a certain Flight of the Conchords song of the very same message, it’d be beneficial for all of us if we took Helium Robots a little more seriously than Brett and Jermaine. To start with, their debut album ‘Voltopia’ circuits all manner of sounds, with ‘Nameless’’ dub bass notes lending the sound of a less spiritualist version of Peaking Lights - elsewhere the light, sweetness of Twin Sister crops up in lead track ‘Silver’. One distinctive sound of individuality might not be achieved, but all the dimensions are in place to make something spectacular.
The band initially formed in 2007, with Ewan later recruiting Lydia to provide vocals atop of these glorious, sparse arrangements. We’re told Lydia took some convincing to add her voice to the mix, but the end result shows it paid off. Expect a full length this Autumn through This Is Music.
