If I could be any musician in the present day, it’d probably be someone like Mac DeMarco. Strapped for cash, sure. But there’s always a beer can in your hand, always a great new song flickering about in your head.

It seems as if young’un Jackson Scott’s taken it upon himself to be that very same individual. In debut LP ‘Melbourne’ he shifts sporadically between different styles - different characters, even - flicking the Bradford Cox switch when he feels like channelling Deerhunter’s progressive musicianship, opting for the DeMarco route when he adds a helium effect to his voice in the breathless ‘Sandy’. He always ends up landing up as someone slinging his guitar on his back with a four-pack of cheap beer in the other hand.

That might be a gruesome stereotype to fling at someone we don’t actually know that much about. Jackson keeps himself to himself, the ‘Melbourne’ album being a very muted release, offered out for free to anyone that stumbled across it. But you can imagine this guy, a couple of years down the line, being the musician sorry sods like myself look up to.
