It’s usual for bands these days to throw out a couple of scrappy Soundcloud demos, or a heap of fuzzy bedroom recordings just to test the water, however the first two tracks we’ve heard from London based Jarbird reach an instant level of sophistication; the sound of a band honing and perfecting each intricate beat and pitch-perfect note to a masterful standard.
Seemingly, the five piece - who all met at Leeds University - have only been about since October last year, but it sounds as though Jarbird have been concocting their blend of minimal alt-pop for far longer than first suggested. Ric Hollingberry and Lara Verney’s voices entwine in an almost undistinguishable fashion, whilst the flawless production coaxes everything to fit together in a neat, jigsaw puzzle-like fashion.
Their latest track ‘Such Is The House’ is a prime example, sharing similarities with the fragmented soundscapes being created by the likes of Adult Jazz, but with a soothing, lucid kind of flow in which each step complements the next. Backing coo’s bleed into an R ‘n’ B tinged verse - its pensive, loping gait and rattling, prickly, Dirty Projectors-esque percussion coming to a climax at 2:00, overflowing with rippling synth loops, and gushing cymbal clashes.
