Every so often the opening seconds of a song are enough to spell out an artist’s intentions. Jethro Fox needn’t do anything else but sit back and let pounding drums enter and dominate the fray for his debut song, ‘Before’’s opening segment. Don’t get us wrong, the Liverpudlian has a staggering set of vocal chords to boot, but it’s this thumping percussion that convinces us of his ambition.
You could assume that the rest of ‘Before’ would be as in-your-face as its introduction but instead we’re offered a restrained blend of rockabilly guitars and participation-inducing handclaps. As a first effort, there’s not a great deal of ground that it fails to cover.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
