Lakisha Kimberly Robinson is NYC’s most exciting new export, with her ‘Navy’ track turning heads these past few months.

Lakisha Kimberly ‘Kish’ Robinson might be compared to the above internet sensations (all three are witty, nonchalant sounding rappers), but this former theatre student has taken her time rather than virally exploding and simmering out within a month or two. Half a year ago, ‘Navy’ emerged. It’s a song that makes the “Kilo” side of the singer’s name seem like petty irony, for it’s so light on its load, laced with deft touches and slight, jazz infusions. It takes minimal, soulful pop in a new direction. Rather than relying on a late-night, heavy-bass atmosphere, it’s clever, high on hooks and smart arrangements.

Odd Future’s The Internet produced ‘Navy’ and elsewhere Pyramid Murdock lends a hand to the more warped and obtuse ‘Sick’ and latest track ‘Watergun’ is another non-showy effort; more in line with something on Janelle Monae’s ‘The ArchAndroid’ album than anything any fellow contemporaries offer. Potential directions are in big supply, but we’re hoping for a little more ‘Navy’-like turns of mastery for the future.
