Louisiana trio Kindest Lines tell us what got them started.

A few weeks prior to the release of their debut LP ‘Covered In Dust’, Louisiana trio Kindest Lines - aka Brittany, Jack and Justin - tell us what got them started.

How’s New Orleans treating you? Is it a good place to be a band?
Justin: There is a lot of youthful energy in the city these days, and people are accepting different types of creativity.

What first got you into making music?
Jack: I had two older cousins that got me into The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Smiths… I just found the sounds they were making more interesting than anything else we were listening to at the time.
Justin: I started playing drums at 8 and stayed with it through high school symphonic and marching band. I actually met Jack in 5th grade. Growing up in a small Louisiana town, our mutual love for skateboarding and heavy metal brought us together. I played my first rock song with Jack on a toy drumset in his bedroom.
Brittany: I always liked to sing and most of my friends played electronic music. I eventually started singing and playing keyboards for them.

Has your sound evolved much since then?
Jack: Honestly not too much, haha. I don’t have to think as much as I used to when I’m writing. I’ve for the most part have had the same guitar and writing style since I was 13 and I don’t mind that at all.

You’ve now completed your debut album, and it’ll be released over here in June. Where did you record?
Jack: We recorded ‘Covered In Dust’ in Chicago at Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv’s studio. One of my good friends, Alfredo Noguiera has access to it and demanded that he record and produce it.

How much of the recording / producing process do you do yourselves?
Justin: We produced all of the demos ourselves at home, so we had the general idea of the sound and structure of everything when we went in to the studio. I did all of the drum tracks ahead of time, but we basically re-recorded everything else in five days. Fredo and Josh did an awesome job our cheap synth sounds on analog gear and Fredo really busted his ass that week getting everything done. We got really lucky; the whole experience has exceeded our expectations and then some.

Does the record have a concept, or any running themes?
Brittany: It’s about making music that people can dance and cry to.

If you had to describe it in five words, what would you say?
Brittany: Crazed, idealist, intoxicated, euphoric, heartache.

Finally: can we expect to see you in the UK anytime soon?
Jack: Hopefully as soon as we can. Let me get my passport and I’ll get back to you on that!

Kindest Lines’ debut album ‘Covered In Dust’ will be released on 15th June via Wierd Records.
