Do you remember those generic shots that were used for children’s photographs during the 90’s (we’re talking about the type seen in the above picture, which is in fact the second grade artist in question)? Well, consider that your starting point of inspiration for Philadelphia’s Andrew Molholt, the one-man band behind new project Laser Background.

His languid, dream-tripping track ‘Pinwheels’ is almost horizontal in its laid back nature, somehow perfectly merging traces of childhood nostalgia with sugary, mind-bending originality. As put by Molholt himself: ‘Laser Background tries to invoke focus on how confusing and crazy and in a lot of ways how psychedelic it feels to be a child trying to make sense of a crazy adult world’.

The skewed, hazy undertone on ‘Pinwhells’ is only half the story though. ‘Weird Conscience’ represents are more lively, strangely loveable slacker rock approach with an accompanying oddball video. If Molholt’s music isn’t your thing, then at least you can admire his refreshing approach to music making.

Laser Background’s debut five track EP is available from 15th July on cassette via Stroll On Records (strollonrecords.bigcartel.com).
