News Little Black Ant

Measured, nuanced and genuinely exciting.

There’s something dirty about using any kind of genre tag to describe your own music, which is why so many bands hide behind slightly vague terms. Little Black Ant is a UK artist who it is probably easiest to categorise in the whole post-dubstep movement that has cropped up in the past few years. LBA herself (Alice Ant is all we know to call her at the moment) seems a little less certain about what the music falls under, blessing the three tracks on soundcloud as ‘Cinimatic’, ‘Erm…’ and ‘It is what it is’ as their description.

Whatever umbrella you want to push this under, it’s difficult not to be impressed. It only takes five minutes of searching through BandCamp to realise the amount of acts that have heard a Four Tet track and think they can do it themselves, always with disastrous consequences. These tracks are measured, nuanced and genuinely exciting. The key is perhaps in the subtlety of it all – it’s spacious and atmospheric without feeling the need to overpower like the witch house forbearers of yore.

A trip to the official Facebook page gives a hint to where all this skill might stem from – a sublime taste in new music. Amongst recent ‘likes’ are Sun Glitters, Gold Panda and the sublime Halls, but this still somehow crafts a niche of its own in amongst these. You feel as though these should be slow burners, but somehow they manage to hit right from the off – we can only watch and wonder what might come next.
