Escapist sun-kissed pop lives on, and if you ever needed testament to such a ridiculously vague statement, play the debut Love In Azores track and think back to the first time you heard Memory Cassette, Weird Tapes, or what we now call Memory Tapes. Dayve Hawk’s music - always comprised of the by-the-book sonic elements required for a great summertime pop song - has a certain misery lining its outer edges. It’s hard to pick up on at first, but it helps add substance to an otherwise dismissible genre.

Love In Azores do this too, almost like-for-like in approach, while thankfully differing in sound. ‘Sun Collapse’ is the title of their first song. So it’s not standard glo-fi fare. The idea of the sun collapsing in on itself; it almost makes you think of the lonely dark months that poor inhabitants of Northern parts of Scandinavia tend to face each year, rather than an idealist escape to a tropical island. To live on beyond a single summer anthem, to make something of true worth, there needs to be a second layer - something of substantial interest - underneath all the dreamy beach-pop goodness. Fixers achieve it. Animal Collective and Panda Bear are looked upon as innovators in this regard, too. And of course, Davye Hawk manages it too. Love In Azores? Well, they’re not far off having the potential of belonging in these upper echelons.
