Similar to: A “lovechild” of The Big Pink and Trailer Trash Tracys (honestly).
A staple of lazy music journalism since the profession’s very beginnings, ‘lovechild’ is an obligatory word, thrown in help describe a band who are difficult to pin down. Usually, the lovechild of Brian Eno and Nick Cave sounds more like Cliff Richard, and the lovechild of Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks is an uninspiring hip-hop artist going nowhere. Cynical? Perhaps. But fortunately a new band has emerged to help give an ineffective word new meaning.
Under the guidance of Foals/TEETH producer Oli Horton, Lovechilde is two-piece Eliot Childe and James Dashwood. They describe themselves as an “audio-visual project” and - before you scoff out your coffee - they’re not bullshitting us. There is an immediacy to this music, beyond a drawling vocal line, far out of reach of the basic drum patterns; there’s an obvious urge to explore and go beyond the norms. Any “visuals” that accompany this probably comprise of loops of nature programmes, with acid-wash backdrops. It wouldn’t surprise us.
The pair have a double A-side single, ‘Tang’ / ‘Tourniquet’, available to download on the band’s site.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
