Neu does its best to cover an act on the brink of something special, but we couldn’t possibly say when Lowell’s due to hit stardom. Could be next week, could be in several years time. Regardless, it’s bound to happen.
Lowell translates as Wolf Club in both English and French. The Canadian singer’s music has a spectacularly rabid quality; beneath the choral vocals and cacophonous tribal percussion defining a track like ‘Shake Him Off’ is something dark, beastly and ever present. To date Lowell’s kept it low-key, working closely with the Apparatjik collective on a debut EP. From what we’ve heard, there’s a blend of pop styling and a see-what-sticks approach, as every instrument in the nearest vicinity is seemingly flung towards the studio microphone. Lowell knows how to excite - that much is apparent in ‘Shake Him Off’ and the ‘Cloud 69’ demo. If she can maintain this level of intensity, the world will be bowing at her feet.
The ‘If You Can, Solve This Jumble’ EP is scheduled for release this Autumn.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
