Neu Mix #14: Ambassadeurs
Brighton producer wields 90s white label geekery for his exclusive DIY mix.
In the late nineties, Brighton producer Mark Dobson was exposed to experimental electronic music for the first time. Latching onto Ninja Tune releases, white label editions, there began the process that led him to where he is today, working under the name Ambassadeurs.
Signed to Pilot Records, his recent ‘Trouble’ EP has simmered under the radar, but it’s one of the most carefully-crafted, ambitious electronic releases of the year. Its disparate parts are to an extent the complete product of his musical upbringing, but there’s also a clear desire to go beyond and express something previously unheard. There’s the drowning abstraction of the title track, warped vocal patterns coming off near-deranged. Then you’ve the luscious pulse of ‘Lucid’, pointing to all things escapist.
But buried far beneath are the staples of Dobson’s taste, and in an exclusive mix for DIY Weekly he exposes them in their all-blossoming entirety. The mix is about looking ahead, despite the nods to years previous. Showcasing the extremities of various genres - the hip-hop force that is Mykki Blanco, the smoothed-out innovation of Dornik - its running theme is that of pushing boundaries.
