News Mix #16: Gaps

Brighton duo have a knack for giving folk a playful sheen. Their exclusive mix for DIY is no exception.

Brighton duo Gaps have a way of giving folk a playful sheen. Their exclusive mix tows a similarly clever line.

Gaps are a smart bunch, playing all the cards in their quest not to be pigeonholed. The duo of Ed and Rachel don’t exactly take to the stage in silver suits and robot masks but they’re always aiming towards the future. Pads, pedals, the famed MacBook (minus the dreaded nodding producer). It’s all there. Only they deck the stage in such a way, and interact with so many knowing nods and cheeky smiles, that it doesn’t alienate. It’s the future without the implausibility. It’s ‘electronic music’ with an emphasis on the latter word.

A handful of early tracks blend wisdom-loaded folk with more abstract, swimming gadgetry. Like Massive Attack doing campfire songs, if you will. Their mix for DIY Weekly blends the two worlds together like it’s second nature. Curated by Ed, it’s a timely reminder of Gaps’ thought-process, one that’s basically left untouched by surrounding bands.
