Mix #28: Primitive Parts

Neu Mix #28: Primitive Parts

Fuzz-favouring London group have digged back into the archives for an exclusive mix.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out Primitive Parts know their stuff. Cursory listens to their early offerings glimpse into a starry-eyed neverending history of rock’n’roll. There’s references to bands of previous decades lining the seams. What this new London group do especially well is a clever skewing of the past into a vibrant, excitable new take that’s right up there with fellow scuzz-lovers Cheatahs and The Wytches.

By the way, Primitive Parts are made up of members from Male Bonding and Sauna Youth, which essentially equates to some kind of heaven sent force raised on punk ideals. They’ve put together an exclusive mix for DIY bringing together enlivened influences that’ve weaselled their way into debut single ‘Open Heads’, out now on Sexbeat. They’ve also kindly added justifications for each choice too. Listen below.

Tonight Primitive Parts play London’s Ace Hotel with Virginia Wing. (It’s free entry)

1. The Homosexuals - Technique Street
Born out of the ashes of The Rejects (1976) at Goldsmith’s College in 1978.

2. RAW PRAWN - wrong place , wrong time
On RIP Society. From one my favourite singles of 2013.

3. 48 Chairs ‘Snap It Around’
Manchester again, on the Absurd label. I think this is John Cooper Clarke’s band with a female singer. 1979 has to the most groundbreaking year for British DIY music.

4. Comet Gain - I Close My Eyes And Think Of God
From their fourth album ‘Realistes’ (2002, Kill Rock Stars / Milou). Well-loved London punks.

5. Pink Floyd - See Emily Play
The loudest 7’ I have ever heard.

6. Bathroom Renovations - Apathetic Hell
Part of the Manchester Musicians Collective. Think this came out in 1980.

7. MICK FARREN & THE DEVIANTS - Screwed Up
RIP Mick Farren. From the 1978 EP on Stiff Records.

8. Juan Wauters - Sanity
Queens, NY gem from Juan of The Beets. His fine LP, ‘North American Poetry’ is out now on the Captured Tracks label.

9. The Particles - Driving Me
Perfectest pop. Australia. 1980s.

9. CANNED HEAT - Poor Moon
‘(Oh well) / It might be tomorrow
(Oh well) / I just don’t know
(Oh well) / It might take years
I wonder when they’re going to
Destroy your face’

10. PHANTOM PAYN DAZE - primitive chamber music phone call blues
Before Phantom Payn Daze, Jurgen Gleue was part of 39 Clocks, a pair of shit-stirring punks from Hannover. This song comes from an album of home demos (I think) released on De Stijl a few years ago.
