Neu Neon Windbreaker
Toronto punks make an art out of stopping short. It happens to be their biggest strength.
: Neon Windbreaker
Based: Toronto
Listen: ‘Pink Suit’
Similar to: Climbing Mount Everest in 30 seconds.
Canada’s a generous beast, offering out sharp-toothed gut-punchers like Neon Windbreaker at a ridiculous rate. These guys stand out though. Their method: Abrupt halts and unrelenting noise.
Every song on their ‘New Sky’ EP - streaming exclusively on DIY - is an exercise in restraint. Relentless energy takes some stopping. In ‘Younger’, the Toronto punks set themselves up with a ridiculously frenetic opening 30 seconds. They could go on, persist and spoil the scene. But it stops dead. 33 seconds. Done. In a way it’s like an arsonist covering a whole town in petrol and not bothering to light a match. But because it’s replicated in such intense, musical form, it’s an impressive final piece in the jigsaw.
Listen to the entire EP below. It clocks in at just over seven minutes. Seriously. It’s out today on We Are Busy Bodies.
