In conversation with The Line Of Best Fit, Pins’ Faith Holgate was confident in stating: “We already know we will be [pigeonholed]. We will be compared to Dum Dum Girls or Vivian Girls and it is fine as we love those bands anyway.” Note that this was before her band had even put their name to a released track. Faith and her bandmates reached that first milestone at the beginning of April, with the unveiling of ‘Eleventh Hour’. Prior to this, a smattering of shows in London and hometown Manchester, alongside a cryptic, half-minute video embedded on their website, could only hint at what was to come. But it’s true, and unfortunately so: the minute some of us are presented with the prospect of four girls playing guitars, the immediate, nonsensical comparisons begin to spring up.

In the aforementioned interview, Pins go on to declare their love for Crystal Stilts, who are far more fitting recipients of a line-drawing comparison. Both sport a rawness beneath their hook-laden guitar lines; each priding themselves on invention and progression from one song to the next. In terms of ambition, very little matches up to Pins’ opening salvo. The video, directed by Sing J. Lee, is a series of blink-and-you-missed-it shots of the band, set against a shape-shifting, kaleidoscope filter. Both ‘Eleventh Hour’ and a flipside on the band’s forthcoming debut tape, ‘Shoot You’, are rich in triumphant chants and cold, rock-hard guitar lines. Far flung from an offshoot of the Brooklyn girl-group movement; it’s the sound of a band caught up in their own, exciting little world.
