Record Store Day 2012 Perspectives: The Store

Features Record Store Day 2012 Perspectives: The Store

We speak to some of the people involved in Record Store Day 2012 to get their perspective on the event. First up, Stockton-on-Tees record store, Sound It Out.

One of our favourite purchases from last year’s Record Store Day turned out to not actually be a record at all. Filmed at the last vinyl record store standing in Teesside, the documentary ‘Sound It Out’ beautifully documented why this little store survives, allowing us glimpses into the record collections of an array of customers, from the inebriated man from the pub across the road, to the Status Quo fan, and the bedroom DJs who spend whatever spare money they have on those shiny black disks.

For Sound It Out, Record Store Day has assumed a vital role in ensuring that their store keeps afloat during an increasingly digital age. As Kelly Laybourne from the shop told us, “Things like Record Store Day are great for creating a buzz around record stores, and putting people’s focus on to the independent retailer. Record Store Day can bring in newcomers to the store, and also to record buying itself, which is a happy side effect. Some people that visited last year have been coming back throughout the year.”

“We will be supplying our early birds this year with a cup of tea, as last year we had a queue before we had even opened; it was very strange and unusual for us, it had never happened before. Last year we gave everyone who queued a cup of tea, this year we might stretch to a bacon sandwich!”

Tea, sangers, and a limited edition White Stripes single; why can’t every day be Record Store Day?

Sound It Out Records can be found at: 15 Yarm Street, Stockton, Stockton-on-Tees, or online at sounditoutrecords.co.uk.
