News Rock En Seine 2012: Bands To Watch

Having suffered through last minute cancellations by headlining acts such as Oasis and Amy Winehouse in previous years, the Rock en Seine team are used to being flexible with their line up. This time round it’s the turn of new media darling Frank Ocean and Childish Gambino (aka Troy from Community) to drop the ball. Luckily, the remaining bill strikes a fair balance between tried and tested indie stalwarts, French fancies and some promising newcomers. With many a column inch already written about the majority of the acts, here’s our pick of five who may have slipped under your radar:

Crâne Angels (3pm, Friday)Rock en Seine 2011 kicked off with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros bringing their own brand of hippy joy to Ile de France and there’ll be more of the same in 2012 but with more members and a French twist. Bordeaux troop Crâne Angels have been earning rave reviews over the past 18 months for their energetic and intense live performances. The troop have already become something of an industry favourite without yet hitting the mainstream, this performance is likely to change that.

C2C (11.30pm, Friday)French dance music has had something of a purple patch (ignore David Guetta) over the past decade with Justice, Daft Punk and Air all establishing themselves as world beaters. C2C, though, have the trophies to show for it. The DJ quartet are four-time Disco Mix Club World Champions despite having never released a record prior to 2012. Debut EP ‘Down the Road’ came out at the turn of the year showcasing their unique brand of electro and there are high hopes for the group’s first full album due in September.

Ume (15pm, Saturday)Having SXSW in your home town must be something of a blessing and a burden but when you’re a band with a reputation for shredding live performances it’s probably more of the former. Coming straight out of Austin, is Texas’ blonde answer to St Vincent, with a strong kick of Howling Bells. Whilst the group’s raw energy doesn’t really come across on record, a hefty selection of iPhoned videos on Youtube act as testament to their blossoming reputation.

The Bots (5.35pm, Saturday)Despite only having a combined age of 32, Mikaiah (18) and Anaiah Lei (14) have already recorded three full length albums and have played the Warped tour twice. The Black Keys may rightly be the star attraction on Saturday night but these brothers from Glendale, California will be taking them on at their own game earlier in the day and their signature punk left hook is sure to win over some new admirers.

Friends (2.30pm, Sunday)If you have enough energy left, make sure to get in early on Sunday as Friends will be providing the perfect hangover cure for the afternoon after the night before. Last October’s breakout single ‘I’m his girl’ was followed up by debut album ‘Manifest’ earlier this year with fat bass lines and heavy duty synth aplenty. Rock en Seine’s PR machine describes the uber-cool Brooklynites as ‘one of the sexiest music projects around’ and with the formidable Samatha Urbani up front we’re not ones to argue.

Rock En Seine will take place from 25th - 27th August just outside Paris, France. Read our interview with organiser Francois Missonier here.
