It’s no fun, but it’s often the case: Producers who build their reputation online lack staying power. They’ll either form a new project, the musical equivalent of opening a new tab, and leave the old music behind. Or they’ll simply disappear. With Rules, a Washington DC producer who’s enjoyed a momentous growth in popularity these past couple of months, you get the sense this one’s here to stay.

That could be mere blind optimism. But Rules harvests a sound that’s barely been sniffed at by contemporaries. Dark and ominous, it’s the sound of the walls collapsing in on a Berlin club in the dead of night, the sound of isolation in the empty streets when everyone else is sleeping. Rules’ masterful application of house and even the slight hint of trance, helps gel unconventional elements together into a piece of tense but rewarding electronic music.
