News Seapony

Bands like Seapony can do what they want and you still love them for it.

Is this really the age that we’ve got to now - bands informing us of their album plans through header images? You get the impression that a band like Seapony could do what they want and you’d still love them for it, though, even if the only clue of their forthcoming LP is limited to the caption ‘Hey dudes, we’re working on a full length record! More details soon…’ through their bandcamp page. And whilst their debut 7” through Double Denim sold out in the kind of speed you’d reserve for a JLS concert in a primary school, you can’t shake the feeling that they’re only going to get bigger – and hopefully better, too.

The formula is one that you’ll be more of aware of by now – a guitar jangling, carefree in the background whilst a honeysuckle voiced west-coaster vocalises her yearning over the top of it. Lead track ‘Dreaming’ is as much about the feeling behind it as the melody itself, that dull aching sensation deep within your chest ever-present throughout its scant two minute running time. Best Coast might have ridden the recipe to stardom, but this is music for those who appreciate Consentino’s charms whilst feeling them a little bit too saccharine, especially compared to the grit of her early demos. Seapony recordings have more of a Vivian Girls edge about them, layered in the manner that a shoegaze song might be but without quite the same introspective look, delivered with a familiar layer of fuzz. Phil Spector might have gone mad and shot somebody, but it’s good to know that all his endeavours haven’t quite gone to waste yet.
