Shoegaze gets a shiny sheen. If you spend half of your days scouring the “dream-pop” tag on Soundcloud, you quickly lose your faith in speaker-blowing pop. That’s until a band like She’s So Rad come along, of course. They stand out from a crop of My Bloody Valentine adoring young’uns with a penchant for sweet noise, because they know how to write a bloody good hook.
Take ‘Confetti’ as your case in point: Guitars aren’t exactly obnoxious, more, they’re craftily layered on top of one another, contributing to a piece that’s bursting with colour, as the song’s accompanying video so brilliantly affirms. They tag onto a M83-approved sense of euphoria, without teetering too close to contemporaries of old; a trap that so many emerging shoegaze-heads seem to dive into headfirst. There’s an entire album’s worth of material to be explored, but we’d suggest you immerse yourself in a fist-full of ‘Confetti’ first.
She’s So Rad play London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 11th May, supporting Ladyhawke.
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
