We Cut Corners are in London tomorrow performing at 93 Feet East so we asked the Irish duo to put us together a soundtrack, their theme being songs that influenced the sound on their Choice award-nominated debut ‘Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards’. Of the topic, the band have this to say:
‘While recording our debut album, we tried the patience of its producer, Jimmy Eadie by constantly bombarding him with emails on things we wanted the record to sound like. We had a look through some of that correspondence while compiling this list. The disparate nature of the amazing songs thereon illustrates how annoying we must have been to work with as we were trying to capture the drum sound of ‘Archie Bronson Outfit’ tinged with the unhinged energy of ‘Titus Andronicus’ underpinned by the lush atmospherics of Ryan Adams’ ‘Starlight Diner’…’
Mountain Man- Soft Skin
American-gothic, call-and-response performed by a trio of forlorn female voices to quite terrifying effect.
Archie Bronson Outfit - Dart For My Sweetheart
A sick, sinister groove.
Cat Power – He War
This song proves that having your guitar in tune is over-rated.
Foxes In Fiction- Flashing Lights Have Ended Now
Started listening to this guy as we began the record and this song became a theme-tune for the times.
The Walkmen – On the Water
Hamilton Leithauser could sing the phonebook and we’d ask for an encore.
Lower Dens- I Get Nervous
This should be the background music for every experience of social anxiety.
Ryan Adams – Starlite Diner
One of his more oblique lyrics- still consistently breaking hearts after all these years.
Titus Andronicus- My Time Outside The Womb
Ridiculous, Patrick Stickles punk, tragicomedy.
Monsters of Folk- Whole Lotta Losin’
Four of our favourite musicians, in one band, making effortless, genre-bending music.
Elliot Smith - Everything Means Nothing To Me
Elliot Smith scaffolds a truly unusual lyric with a baroque piano figure to create something very special.
We Cut Corners will be performing at London’s 93 Feet East on Friday 6th April. ‘Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards’ is available now.
Featuring Yard Act, Death Cab For Cutie, Graham Coxon, Maisie Peters and more.
