When Bandcamp and Soundcloud surfaced as viable places for us inquisitive music fans to visit, in order to find our new favourite bedroom producers, you did have to ask yourself whether or not any of these acts would be able to make that step forward from casual recording to committed touring. But from the moment you first lay ears on Sun Glitters (real name Victor Ferreira) and his debut release ‘Everything Could Be Fine’, you come to the stonewall conclusion that herein lies an artist ready, or at the very least, worthy, of aiming for that almighty move onwards. A prolific remixer, with a penchant for one-off online releases, Ferreira’s name is a regularity on every casual listener’s Soundcloud dashboard, Facebook wall and Twitter feed. A formidable King of the online world, then. But having set foot just last week for his first ever live dates in the UK, DIY wanted to ask the Luxembourg artist how he felt about moving from a blogosphere, into a few sweaty, dingy venues.
A lot of articles about you cite that you’re from Luxembourg and that not a lot of other good stuff comes from your country. Can you prove these people wrong? Is there anything you’d like to recommend?
I don’t really agree with it… Sun Glitters’ profile is becoming more recognised in other parts of the world, so why can’t others? I’ve had the chance to be discovered outside of Luxembourg, and that makes a big difference… I personally have lots of respect for other Luxembourg-based artists like Blue Dressed Man, Emre Sevindik, in circles, Loose Body Parts, Fracture, Cyclorama, Hal Flavin among lots of others!
You’re seemingly always working on something, with someone, be it a remix or a collaboration or a song of your own. Do you always intend to stay as prolific as you are right now?
For me, at the moment, it’s important that I stay focused, and only collaborate with someone when it feels right.
Which artists/songs have you enjoyed remixing the most?
It’s hard to say, because every artist sounds different and can bring something new to my remixes and for my own personal work! I love them all But should I have to mention one, I would say ‘Ungirthed’ for Purity Ring.
Are there any big artists out there that you’d be desperate to work with?
No - Sun Glitters collaborations should happen naturally. It doesn’t matter how big they are!
You’re about to start playing live for the first time, with dates in the UK. How’s it been, planning your live show? Has it been a big test at all?
Yes definitely! I’m also still working with a booking agent who is doing a great job as well - he plans my whole European Tour and the shows in the UK!
A lot of your initial support came from music bloggers - How important do you think bloggers are for breaking a band into bigger things?
I have lots of respect for all bloggers, to me, they are real music lovers! They can be very influential, when it comes to breaking new artists. I’m very thankful for all the recognition bloggers have, and continue to give Sun Glitters.
