Sylver Tongue is certainly not what you would expect from former Ash guitarist Charlotte Hatherley. It seems to be something of a musical reinvention. Eschewing the perky guitar pop of her old group or her well-received solo material, Sylver Tongue’s sound is sparkling electro pop. It makes for a very pleasant surprise.

‘Something Big’ is Hatherley’s first EP under the Sylver Tongue name and it is a nice introduction to her new sound. Hatherley herself seems to be revelling in her new creative approach. The video for the lead title track sees a jewel encrusted Hatherley singing against a kaleidoscopic space age background.

There is a beguiling quality to Sylver Tongue’s music as evidenced on early track ‘Creatures’ which also features on the EP. It is a restless collision of styles between early 70s pop and a mechanically electronic sound; it’s an intriguing take on a well worn style that promises much. It is a refreshing change to seen an artist who has been around for a very long time attempt something genuinely new.
