Speaking to many Japan-based artists about their impact on these shores, you often hear them claim that those back in their native country wouldn’t give their kind of music the time of day. Super VHS’s brand of lo-fi hasn’t won adoration back home, despite making waves with bloggers over in the UK. Electronic artist Beat Culture also stumbled upon considerable success with Western audiences before his music became a worldwide phenomenon. But you get the sense that Taffy won’t experience this shunning sensation from those in Japan.

Granted, everything on their debut ‘Caramel Sunset’ album screams britpop at you; its saccharine vocals and spiky guitar lines revisiting the mid 90s with unparalleled aplomb. Perhaps it’s ignorance, but it’s difficult to imagine anyone, regardless of location, not tapping their foot to this. Unsurprisingly the band have won some praise back in Tokyo, with the Japan Times leading a pack of adoring fans. The sound they’re sporting is utterly universal, too irresistible to turn a blind eye to.

First On has been given an exclusive stream of one of the forthcoming album’s many highlights, in the form of ‘Candy Lane’.
