New music guide The Neu Bulletin (10th November 2014)

DIY’s daily new music guide, featuring The Derevolutions, Yumi Zouma and Jr.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Yumi Zouma - London, Birthdays

Almost a year on from uploading a mysterious demo online, Yumi Zouma are coming into full bloom. The ocean-crossing trio are making just their second UK visit tonight for a special headline gig at Birthdays, linking up with the stirring new ‘Alena’ single.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Jr. - Okinawa

It’s not very often that a new band come forward with a sound and look that’s as complete as LA’s Jr. And having unassumingly set loose four separate tracks in the past few months, you’d be right not to have heard of the trio. But boasting songs like the charming and perfected indie-ballad ‘Okinawa’, Jr.’s diverse alt-pop sound is likely to strike a chord with anyone who’s even slightly familiar with bands like Born Ruffians, Local Natives and Vampire Weekend. OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
The Derevolutions - Bad King Kong

Not since similarly-minded loons The Go! Team has production sounded quite as scatterbrained and on the brink of exploding as with Boston loop-head The Derevolutions. Mixing ‘60s psych samples with a glitzy modern-day sheen, it’s good to see those brought up on the madness of The Avalanches applying this crazed mentality in absence of a follow-up to ‘Since I Left You’. New track ‘Bad King Kong’ is a perfectly-poised dose of crazy.
