New music guide The Neu Bulletin (10th September 2014)

Lia Ices, dd elle and Bastian Bujai feature in today’s new music tips.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Lia Ices - London, Birthdays

Lia Ices remains an unsung gem, a source of oddball pop that isn’t going to get dug up in any old places. With her ‘Ices’ record out now (with clams Casino lending the odd bit of production knowhow), tonight she lands in London to showcase her trippy, tropical new leanings.

THE BIG NEU THING:
dd elle - tell me

You’ll be hard pushed to find a more mysterious, more curious pop project than dd elle. Borrowing in parts from Jai Paul and even the faint whispers of Youth Lagoon, new track ‘tell me’ is being given away for free as a further reminder that showy melodies can still be shrouded in all things unorthodox. This is a song that peaks when it shouldn’t, goes for a climax when there’s little point - nothings belongs, and yet out steps a brilliantly instant pop track.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Bastian Bujai - No ID

True to its title, Bastian Bujai’s latest track isn’t the kind of thing that’ll warrant entry into solid establishments. Berghain might let him in, mind you - because this is a strange, disorienting electronic track that calls itself “abandoned house” but actually ends up abandoning all sense of normality. Chopped and screwed to within an inch of its original self, it’s a splintering but strangely assured electronic effort.
