THE GIG
Rad Fru - London, The Islington
‘Flares and bitchin’ costumes necessary for admission’, reads the agenda for Rad Fru’s London headline show tonight. It promises to be a 70s challenging event to reckon with.
THE BIG NEU THING
Swim Team
Swim Team EP by swim_team
Back when clubs were called ‘discos’, kids that looked like Napoleon Dynamite could actually get girls and dance moves were more elaborate than the drinks list at Slug & Lettuce. Music like that of Swim Team’s played in the background, ensuring that any drunken endeavour was backed by something glitzy, synth-heavy and ready to burst. Swim Team’s self-titled debut EP has the Austin band standing out alongside Smith Westerns as US-based nostalgists painting the old in a shiny new gloss. Handclaps, discotheque drums, melodies Human League would die for: It’s all there.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Netherfriends - Uptown Boys
3P by Netherfriends
Netherfriends - a.k.a. Chicago native Shawn Rosenblatt - is a prolific one-man producing machine. ‘Uptown Boys’, the opening cut from his latest three track EP, cleverly titled ‘3P’, sees deep hip hop beats and mid-fi synthetics mesh over his sing-y/shout-y/talk-y vocal delivery, gushing about the delights of eternal stoner-dom. What’s not to like? [Nathan Standlee]
Festival special! Featuring Wolf Alice, Kasabian, Lykke Li, Marmozets, Genesis Owusu and more.
