THE GIG
Kirk Spencer, IYES, Gaps, Crvvcks - London, The Old Blue Last (FREE)

The second of Neu’s four-date residency at London’s best new music video for the ‘How June Is Now’ series, tonight’s gig pits two of Brighton’s brightest prospects in years - Gaps and IYES - alongside Nottingham’s Kirk Spencer (whose live shows is something to behold) and production duo Crvvcks.

THE SONG
FALKS - dark side
dark side by FALKS

LA’s Falks flood their recordings with bittersweet emotion. Give them a blank canvas and they’ll paint a sorry picture of something easy on the eye. That’d be the visual equivalent of these songs, particularly with ‘dark side’, which bases itself on starry-eyed, sullen pianos and vocals lines aligned with one Eddi Front. Gorgeous, unrelentingly so. Emotions are never overbearing if they’re executed with as much grace as on here.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Leon Else - Tomorrow Land (All Fall Down)

It’s a hearty task imagining this demo in its full quality. Londoner Leon Else doesn’t seem to be the modest type. On Soundcloud he declares ‘The future’s bright…The future’s LEON.’ He’s probably being tongue-in-cheek. But on the basis of ‘Tomorrow Land (All Fall Down)’ any sod as talented as this could easily fall prey to the ego. The debut effort from this Universal signing bathes in dusky production, Leon’s voice floating from Oliver Sim of xx-fame-like hush to the R&B melodrama of The Weeknd in one finite stroke.
