New music guide The Neu Bulletin (11th September 2014)

DIY’s new music tips include Girlpool and Robyn Sherwell.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Robyn Sherwell - London, The Islington

This London newcomer’s forlorn, love-shunning pop isn’t of a completely new ilk, but Robyn Sherwell’s latest ‘Love Somebody’ track - which premiered on DIY - masters the art of deft-touched R&B pop. Tonight she makes a hyped-up appearance at The Islington.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Girlpool - Jane

Say hello to Girlpool, Wichita Recordings’ high-pitched scream-friendly new signings. Earlier this year Harmony Trividad and Cleo Tucker put out their self-titled debut, and it’s set to get a vinyl release on the London label this November. They’re also arriving in the UK to perform with Alex G in the capital (19th November). ‘Jane’ - which has been remastered from its February original - gets by on simple but intentionally disjointed, scrappy guitar work that’s stepped right out a disused barn in the U.S. desert. That’s without mentioning lyrics about shoving fists in guys’ mouths, and the kind of piercing scream that might prompt a panicked, instinctive headphone removal.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Corey Bowen - Strange Pop and Other Musings - Vol. 1

Corey Bowen’s stepped straight out of an abandoned amusement park, or a rusty arcade choking on its own 2p coins. Dosed up on retro, his oddball pop takes notes from early Mac DeMarco in sending sharp riffs through a timewarp. He’s set to support Christopher Owens on UK dates this autumn, as a means of catching up to the present day.
