THE GIG
Drenge, Blood Sport - Portsmouth, The Registry
Brothers Loveless headline one of several dates on a UK tour, landing on the South Coast just in time for the weekend. Doors are at 8pm, with Blood Sport (a fitting name for a Drenge support act, if ever we heard one) kicking things off at 9 and the headliners gracing the stage at 10. It’s free entry too, folks.
THE WEEKEND GIG
Night Beds, Farewell JR, Early Ghost - Brighton, The Hope (Sunday 14th)
Neu favourite Farewell JR has been relentlessly touring his debut EP ‘Health’ ever since its release last month. But we’d wage that few shows will be as intimate or as momentous as tonight’s bill. Winston Yellen’s Night Beds project headlines, so it’s a perfect meeting ground of bands all seeking a similar, harrowing sound. But it’s Nick Rayner who we’ll be keeping an eye on.
THE SONG
Sonjagon - Gondor
Despite the Lord of the Rings-referencing name of the track Sonjagon aren’t a bunch of fantasy metal dudes. Or maybe they’ve got a side-project for that. The Stockholm, Sweden based trio released their debut record ‘Arches’ in 2009 to great acclaim in their native country before disappearing for a few years. This week they’re finally back with a new EP titled ‘I Am Terra The Earth’ on the newly started Stockholm label Kvalität. ‘Gondor’ starts out slow, showcasing Jacob Stenberg’s impressive vocals, before turning into something far more ambitious, reminiscent of a harder and more progressive The Shins or Arcade Fire.
