New music guide The Neu Bulletin (12th March 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Tourist, La Leif and The Whales.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Tourist
London, Oslo
Will Phillips’ journey has been a strange one. At the turn of the year, he won a Grammy for co-writing Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’. But the London producer’s yet to release a full-length, instead taking a route of head-turning standalone tracks and promising EPs. Tonight he plays a sold out London Oslo. We were there last night, hosting a Marina and the Diamonds party. To be honest, there’s probably a few cherry hats and giant balloons sitting around in the venue. Look out for those, Will.
THE BIG NEU THING:
The Whales - Marguerite
Straight-up, brutally honest songwriting is The Whales’ game, and their ‘Marguerite’ track is the best example yet of the Cambridge group’s immediacy. Guitar hooks wrestle for space like on a Parquet Courts track, and while they’re borrowing from a couple of rulebooks, there’s an unstoppable pace to the band’s routine that feels like a breath of fresh air.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
La Leif - Water Torture (ft. Yon Voosti)
‘Water Torture’ is the latest example of South London producer La Leif’s ability to make room for the otherworldly. With fellow newcomer Yon Voosti on vocals (and William Arcane on mastering duties), this is a showcase of some of most exciting talent south of the river has to offer. Disjointed to an extreme, ‘Water Torture’ sits somewhere between Warpaint’s spaciousness-first mentality and Peaking Lights’ eye for repetition.
