THE GIG
MONEY - London, The Waiting Room
Recent Bella Union signings MONEY release their debut album this August. Let this serve as a taster for anybody that’s yet to witness their beguiling live show ought to cancel all plans, however important, and head down to tonight’s show. Support comes from the excellent Fun Adults.
THE SONG
jaguar - lush
lush ep by jaguar
They’re not lying, those Lisbon-based folks jaguar. This really is a luscious piece. Opening an EP of the same name, its squeaky-clean aesthetic might distract some from just how perfectly-placed and god damn smart the songwriting is here. It’ll run from tightly-knit, shoegaze-indebted verses, head-first into heady instrument sections, just like there’s no tomorrow. These songs, however, were recorded in between 2000-2004, so no word on whether this sort-of-re-release will put the group in good stead for the future.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Psychic Friend - Mirror Maze
Mirror Maze by Psychic Friend
This is the perfect, archetype example of woozy, psychedelic rock winning you over. Sure, half of the vocals are basically wordless because they’re shrouded in wiry guitars. Ok, the structure is pretty predictable, good-time atmospherics to boot. But Psychic Friend’s debut track is so sweetly-wired, so honeyed to the very core, it actually begins to work more like a tasty treat than a piece of music. Particularly when you’re encountered with the wild, beautifully placed closing section, where guitar parts take a life of their own, going beyond the powers of their makers, if that were indeed possible.
