THE GIG
Skaters - London, Sebright Arms
Over from Brooklyn, three piece Skaters one of several US bands making the most of playing this year’s Great Escape Fest by taking to a whole UK jaunt to boot. Any Londoner sticking to their city of choice this weekend has to come along to this. It’s sold out - support comes from Blackeye.
THE SONG
Lightning Bug - Lullaby no. 2
Lullaby no. 2 by Lightning Bug
Never has bunking off sounded so beautiful. ‘I don’t think that I’ll be going to school today,’ runs the opening line of the debut track from New York’s Lightning Bug. Half of ‘Lullaby no. 2’ details fear of the sun, keeping the curtains firmly closed, wishing the day away. But the song’s backing - in the form of soft, lulling chimes - makes fear of the open world come off like a divine practice. This song could run for miles, hours, and your dreamy lull would barely slip.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
LODRO - Lazy Bones
Rounding off a trio of New York acts featured in today’s Bulletin, LODRO’s cold-hearted cinematic punk has been on the agenda for a couple of months, but this new ‘Lazy Bones’ video - which premiered on Brooklyn Vegan - spells out the band’s ambition in stark caps. It’s the project of former Friends bassist Lesley Hann and Royal Baths members Jeremy Cox and Jigmae Baer. Experience coming into play, ideas were never going to be lacking for these guys. With ‘Lazy Bones’, they come into further fruition, lending a dark core to imaginative, ever-shifting rock ‘n roll.
