New music guide The Neu Bulletin (13th May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Yak, The Big Moon, HANA and Mouth.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Yak, The Big Moon
St Moritz, London
At the finishing line of their trip across the UK, two of the brightest new bands in years combine at London’s St Moritz club tonight. Yak sport a ferocious, disorienting live show that can’t be matched. And The Big Moon are making first steps more foreboding than Godzilla coming out of the sea.
THE BIG NEU THING:
HANA - Clay
With the ‘Endless Summer’ rolling in, HANA has just been tipped by every big name under the sun as the next big thing. She’ll be performing alongside Grimes and Lana Del Rey on their forthcoming tour, and Blood Diamonds has produced this blink-and-you-missed-it pop flash, ‘Clay’. It arrives approved by Lorde, Ariel Rechtshaid, Baths - and make no mistake, they’re not just bigging up their mate.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Mouth - Sebastien
Ottawa’s Mouth captures a day-glo, lo-fi aesthetic in a way that feels new. Like Ariel Pink or Mac DeMarco, there’s a different spin on this kind of recording, one that goes beyond the small-parts gimmick. ‘Sebastien’ is an arms-aloft, all-together alternative anthem, potentially about the famous donkey in Parks and Recreation.
