New music guide The Neu Bulletin (15th January 2015)

DIY’s daily new music tips, featuring Fallow Deer, Stalls and Alex Jefferies.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Fallow Deer, Warm Brains, Morning Smoke, Strange Cages - Brighton, Green Door Store

Brighton’s never short of new names to shake up a scene, and tonight they’re packed together for a night celebrating Morning Smoke’s new EP. The newly-fledged four-piece includes Isaac Ide, who makes music as California Carpool. Elsewhere on the bill there’s Warm Brains, Strange Cages and the extra-exciting Fallow Deer, who seem to have deleted all semblance of their ear-crunching force from Soundcloud.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Stalls - Cola

Frenetic, disjointed and close to collapse, Sam Weiss’ Stalls project makes a devilish introduction on a new self-titled cassette, due out 20th January on Vacant Stare. Murder on the dancefloor, there’s a particular troublesome zing to ‘Cola’, a track that takes ‘70s staples - aspects of glam and post punk - and fizzes them together into a deadly output.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Alex Jefferies - STILL (ft. Jess)

File Alex Jefferies next to the distant sirens of fellow Londoner Alex Burey, or even in the murky genre-bending chill of someone like Spooky Black. On his only track to date, he brings a scattershot mentality to smooth, jazz-nodding pop. Beats are a fraction of the way full, light coos adding a magnetic effect to his easygoing verses. Every exhalation comes off like it might be Jefferies’ last, or maybe it’s the opposite - an early morning, first intake of air.
