Features The Neu Bulletin (15th May 2014)
Tourist, Semi Precious and June feature in today’s new music guide.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
Tourist, Boy In A Movie - London, Basing House
Will Phillips has picked out a special location for a rare London appearance. Based in Shoreditch, Basing House is an after-hours haunt, well-equipped for Tourist’s fizzing productions. Support Boy In A Movie is another exciting name to look out for.
THE BIG NEU THING
Semi Precious - Shaky Skies
There’s a definite How To Dress Well flavour to Semi Precious’ work. The London producer relies on his voice and two - specifically two - “chopped” and “warped” samples. Sometimes this leads to beautiful chaos, sometimes it brings us this: ‘Shaky Skies’ is like the Twin Peaks soundtrack inverted; a haunting and creaking soundtrack to isolation. This is his first song in seven months - so he’s been storing up a whole lot of darkness in his system. Out it stirs.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
June - Lucite
june by june
It begins with a Lana Del Rey cover, and then we get to know the new Los Angeles songwriter June. ‘Lucite’ is highlight of Maddie Freeman’s delicate-to-the-touch first collection of songs. It’s nothing but sparsely laid out chords and barely-there vocals, but sometimes this is all that’s required for a big-impact introduction.
