Features The Neu Bulletin (15th October 2012)
Neu’s daily guide to nights out and new music. Featuring Empress Of and Fun Adults.
Neu’s got you covered for new music recommendations and nights out this week. Each day we’ll give you a choice gig, plus a selection of fresh artists to check out.
THE GIG
It’s a warm get together in Leeds tonight as one of the city’s most prized new bands celebrate making one hell of a first impression on bloodthirsty bloggers the world over. ‘Sap Solid/Acacia’, by Fun Adults, is one of the more exciting, surprising turns provided by a British “guitar band” this year, proving there’s still plenty to explore and revel in.
Fun Adults play Leeds’ Nation of Shopkeepers tonight. Details here.
THE SONG
Granted, it’s under a minute long, and in truth it’s a mere snippet of an overall song, but ‘12’ furthers interest in the mysterious Empress Of project. At the time of writing, they’ve now uploaded 13 videos (an album’s worth) to their Youtube Channel, all with blank canvas artwork, like the above, all sonically distinct and wonderfully produced. Our obsession with this teaser act is becoming unhealthy; not in the sense that we’re playing guessing games as to who’s behind the whole project, more because we’re desperate to hear an entire album in all its glory.
FURTHER NEU BUSINESS
outdoing urself by Heaven Meadows
Ben Rosett, who drums with a band called Strawberry Girls, has teamed up with Caleb Ellison to produce a low-key record under the Heaven Meadows name. This is the sort of thing that’ll easily go under most people’s radar, such is its side-project nature, but it’s an electronic album that covers a ridiculous amount of territory, from hip-hop samples to evocative dream-pop. And it might be the first thing I’ve ever heard that contained a token “wob wob wob” dubstep mid-section, without annoying the hell out of me. So call this a landmark occasion and listen to the whole of ‘outdoing urself’ here.
