New music guide The Neu Bulletin (15th September 2014)
Fickle Friends and Vesuvio Solo feature in today’s batch of tips.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Fickle Friends w/ Jaws - Brighton, The Haunt
This September sees Birmingham gems JAWS taking Brighton newcomers Fickle Friends on tour with them. Their monthly run belongs in a familiar setting, with the latter’s glossy pop opening up in local dig The Haunt.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Vesuvio Solo - Avion
Take a trip, fly anywhere, and get sent skywards by ‘Avion’, the airmile-racking new track from Vesuvio Solo. This is the project of Thom Gillies (formerly of TOPS) and Cameron MacLean. Their first work, ‘Favors’, came together over the course of three years, but they’ve been writing together way before then. ‘Avion’ showcases this tight musicianship - filtered through a heady alt-pop sway - and uses classical methods to devastating effect. It’s premiering on DIY, and the album’s coming out on tape (14th October) via Atelier Ciseaux (EU/ROW) and Banko Gotiti (North America). Pre-order here or here, depending on your location.
Catch the band playing Banko Gotiti at POP Montreal (21st September) and Guez Roast (22nd September).
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Sunny Days - Makes You Happy
Sunny Days is a new project based in North Carolina, specialising in sending classic psych staples through a ready-made bedroom pop aesthetic. Organ notes ring out, drums shuffle into place, and a lazy-day aesthetic gets sent into more curious territory thanks to a lifetime’s supply of effects and delay techniques. ‘Makes You Happy’ is a more than promising start.
