New music guide The Neu Bulletin (17th December 2014)

DIY recommends new music from Corey Bowen, GRRL PAL and M.O.T.O.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

Corey Bowen and Fake Laugh - London, Market Bar

It’ll be an actual feat to fit both these bands in London’s tiny Market Mar, led alone the fans attempting to cram into the Dalston space. Tonight sees bedroom kids Corey Bowen and Fake Laugh uniting, the former returning in 2015 to play the first of DIY’s Hello 2015 shows at The Old Blue Last. A gem in the increasingly sparse December calendar.

Purity Ring led the way in fusing harsh electronics with a sickly sweet take on distortion. By 2014, their initial wave of juxtapositions looks fairly tame compared to what followed. With GRRL PAL, Perth duo Jay Lekat and Danny K go one step further, beating their own bonkers drum until it bursts. ‘NGHT’ is a divine pop song wrapped in a coat of wires - deadly if you come too close.

M.O.T.O - Gotham

Based out of Edinburgh is M.O.T.O, a new project led by Kwasu Tembo. Its initial stand for “Master of the ordinance”, which in all honesty sounds like the worst James Bond spinoff title imaginable, but it still points the way to Tembo’s way of thinking. He places himself and his music right in the heart of a fantasy land, click-clacking a route through hazy electronics and deep, experimental percussion. New track ‘Gotham’ is a dark knight, a reluctant warrior.
