THE GIG
Night Engine - Newcastle, The Cluny

Liverpudlians Night Engine are fast-becoming one of the best live bands around. In the midst of a pretty hefty UK tour, they stopover in Newcastle tonight showcasing recent single ‘Give Me A Chance / Young And Carefree’.

THE SONG
Arqestry - Fell
Fell by Arqestry

USA producer Arqestry ties himself to the ‘808s and Heartbreaks’, Justin Vernon-weeping-into-a-vocoder aesthetic. He latches onto the very edges of misery-sodden, gadget-enhanced songwriting, without ever going below the belt. Instead the bigger concern lies with experimentation, using all the toy-like instruments in the nearest vicinity and running wild with ‘em. Basic songwriting wrapped up in clever tricks. It happens all the time, such a technique, but few master it so openly as on this debut track.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
HAWKON - 1000 Questions

An apt title for such an exciting debut track. You’ll be searching every corner of the web for clues as to HAWKON’s identity once you lay ears on ‘1000 Questions’. R&B with all the intelligent sideshow tricks to boot, not a moment goes by where this first work doesn’t throw up a new, sleight touch. It can only be the work of some clever sod with tons of material locked away for the future. Or at least, we’re praying that’s the case.
