THE GIG
Drenge - London, Rough Trade East
One of the debuts of the year lands itself in the hands of thousands of eager punters today, as Yorkshire duo Drenge release their self-titled first work. Rough Trade East hosts Eoin and Rory Loveless in the midst of a ceaseless trek through the country, sporting their nigh-on unparalleled live shows. It’s a free gig, this. Kicks off at 6pm.
THE SONG
White Poppy - Who Are You
Drifters Gold by White Poppy
One for the drifters, as the title of Crystal Dorval’s latest work, ‘Drifter’s Gold’, so clearly states. Take all the tired cliches of escape - the beaches, the parks, the long train journeys - and swipe them aside in favour of White Poppy. ‘Who Are You’ doesn’t necessarily reach Grouper-levels of ambience, but it sure as hell goes for the jugular in sending sweet songwriting through a sleepy aesthetic. Drift along and fall in love.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Mini Dresses - Watching You
The duo of Lira Mondal and Caufield Schnug are casual disguise-dwellers. They work in the same capacity in two different bands: Silkies & the more dreamily inclined Mini Dresses. ‘Watching You’ is one of two near tracks produced by the pair. Conceived in the very depths of sea-caves and neon-glowing Berlin clubs, there’s a distinct, aqueous dark-wave movement running right through the track. Chromatics for scuba divers, if such a prospect exists.
