New music guide The Neu Bulletin (19th January 2015)

DIY’s daily delivery of new music, featuring Laura Doggett, Brathouse and Jason Lee.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Laura Doggett - London, The Globe

A big hope for 2015, Laura Doggett’s upward trajectory recently took a big boost when she ended up soundtracking the new series of morbid mystery drama Broadchurch. Tonight she headlines lovely London space The Globe, ahead of much bigger things no doubt.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Brathouse

A batch of demos puts Brathouse on the map as a bellowing, yelp-friendly project. Based out of Montclair, it’s a one-man band made up with a supporting cast of sweet, sun-basking nostalgia. Sounds familiar, but on a song like ‘Nova 500’, melodies strike like early Beach Fossils, ‘Pom Pom Killer’ recalling sweet pop punk filtered into bedroom-based dreams.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Jason Lee - Frustration

Stick with Jason Lee. The Chicago bedroom kid’s debut takes a while to get going, almost like it’s trying to keep an eventual booming chorus to itself. Sinking in and out of consciousness, eventually ‘Frustration’ hits the mark, going beyond a slew of queasy guitars. “You’ve seen so much,” he sings, sounding more haunted than the song’s subject.
