New music guide The Neu Bulletin (19th June 2014)
Neu’s batch of new music tips picks out Holy Milk, Wand and Champions League.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG: Holy Milk — Brighton, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
New Cross band Holy Milk are a standout name on a Brighton bill that also promises thrills from thrashers YOUTHBLOOD and fellow fresh faces The Eskimo Chain and STRANGE CAGES. Holy Milk promise something very different - fully-charged, expansive instrumentation that channels’ Warpaint’s inner ‘jam’. It’s £4 for tickets on the door.
THE BIG NEU THING:Wand — Flying Golem
Wand aren’t real people. They don’t download apps, they don’t give a fuck about emojis - they’re higher people, called down from the heavens to cast a spell of earth-shattering psych. Debut track ‘Flying Golem’ might be the most loony thing to ever strike a Neu Bulletin, a song so colossal in shape it makes Pond’s ocean of a sound look like an, err… pond. This is mean, crunchy rock ’n roll, the kind reserved for actual real life freak outs with no redeemable conclusion.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Champions League — Flaco
There might be a World Cup going on, but let’s not forget the most competitive football competition in the world: The Champions League. A balearic band of the same name have struck up a serious GOALSTRIKE with this peach of a song called ‘Flaco’, which is so all-encompassing and euphoric it’ll definitely wind up on a goals montage. It’s taken from the ‘Ebiza’ EP, which is available for pre-order on Paypal (no joke).
