New music guide The Neu Bulletin (20th August 2014)

Today’s new music guide picks out Charlotte OC, The Reporters and Swedish band Alexandria.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Charlotte OC - London, Hoxton Bar and Kitchen

London newcomer Charlotte OC’s continuing her ascent with the release of a new EP, ‘Strange’, this September. Tonight she plays the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, following a packed-out headline gig at London’s Sebright Arms earlier this month. Anyone schooled in pristine, soulful pop needs to come along.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Alexandria - Another Station [DIY Premiere]

This week, Stockholm dream-poppers Alexandria release their debut EP ‘Laid Back 4 Ever’. An immediate standout is ‘Another Station’, which floods the senses with muted guitar notes and reverb-drenched vocals that sound as if they’re in a state of transit entirely of their own. Escapism’s the game, but this is also a track burrowed down by its own frustrations, where repetitive mundanity is shunned to one side. Dreamy is one thing, dreaming big is another, and Alexandria seem to opt for the latter.

‘Laid Back 4 Ever’ is out 21st August via PNKSLM Recordings.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Reporters - Hold The Controls

It’s strange to see a couple of riled-looking teenagers dressed head to toe like the cast from This Is England making music straight out of New York circa 2000. ‘Hold The Controls’ is brilliantly in debt to The Strokes and every spiky NYC gem that arrived thereafter. But there’s a British charm to The Reporters too, a wit and a scruffy-necked swagger that warrants its own place on the map. They sing about being able to “trigger an Earthquake”, and this song isn’t that far off.

Reporters play London’s Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on 8th September.
