THE GIG
Seapony, Just Handshakes - Brighton, The Hope

Seattle’s Seapony are down in the UK for the next month or so, their wiry guitars being backed by Leeds’ Just Handshakes, who release their debut album today. Anyone flat out refusing to leave Brighton after this year’s Great Escape can find precious refuge at The Hope.

THE SONG
Puddel - Downtown

The bass rumple that opens Puddel’s debut track isn’t indicative of the sweetness, the honeyed glow that soon follows. Jeremy Lloyd and D.J Stanfill’s constructions propel experimental production into timeless, R&B territory, like How To Dress Well backed by a flock of doves. This one’s a free download - so go grab.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Birdskulls - Spidey’s Curse (Black Lips cover)

Brighton three-piece Birdskulls aren’t ones to shy away from distortion and noise as we saw quite plainly on their cassette single through Art is Hard Records towards the end of last year. And they’ve certainly left their mark on Black Lips’ version of ‘Spidey’s Curse’ - the fairly jangly, jaunty guitar of the original replaced with loud riffing and topped with some throaty vocals. ‘SURPRISE HAPPY TUESDAY ITS RAINING SO I THOUGHT YOU COULD HAVE A SONG,’ guitarist and vocalist Jack Pulman wrote on Facebook. Let’s hope the rain doesn’t wash poor Incy down the spout. [Jake May]
