New music guide The Neu Bulletin (21st May 2015)
DIY’s new music tips, featuring Tei Shi, Nonsense and Boy Band.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG: Tei Shi
Tonight sees Valerie Teicher aka Tei Shi playing one of her first London shows. It’s sold out, and it lands ahead of an appearance on DIY’s stage at Field Day (she’s also playing Liverpool Sound City this weekend). Expect her already enlivened alt-pop to break down even more doors on stage.
London, Red Gallery
Anything but Westlife, Boy Band like to lurk in dark spaces. The Los Angeles four-piece are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum to Dublin thrashers Girl Band (this isn’t Popstars: The Rivals, sadly). They find refuge in murky beats and sweet Amazonian synth tricks, like Glass Animals if they spent less time in the jungle, more in glassy-eyed clubs.
THE BIG NEU THING:Boy Band — 2 U
Super sarcy, snarling two-piece punk from New York - Nonsense are, as a matter of fact, a no-nonsense outfit. Fucking around isn’t in their DNA, and they’ll race between structures and rough-edged ideas like there’s a sprint to be finished. They’ve dates lined up with Perfect Pussy, Big Ups and on an Exploding in Sound showcase - if you’re lucky enough to be in the States to see them, don’t miss out.
